Sketches, 1817-1875, [n.d.].

This group of ink, pencil, and watercolor sketches, with some engravings and lithographs, forms the corpus of Peale's artistic output and can be grouped into several periods. The pre-1818 period consists primarily of watercolors of butterflies. There are views of animals, Indians, landscapes from the Stephen H. Long Expedition to the Rocky Mountains in 1819-1820, on which Peale traveled as zoologist. From his 1821-1838 interlude period, spent primarily on the East Coast, there are drawings of insects, animals, moose hunting in Maine, his trip to South America in 1830-1831, and coin and medal designs. There are drawings made when he was a naturalist on the worldwide United States Exploring Expedition (1838-1842) under the command of Charles Wilkes. Peale sketched scenes around Washington, D.C. and in New Jersey from 1849 to 1873.
